In a recent interview, Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, expressed his strong opposition to the Trump administration's proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027. This budget request, which represents a significant 42% increase from the previous year, has sparked a heated debate among policymakers and the public alike.
The Outrageous Defense Budget
Kelly, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, described the budget as "outrageous" and urged the administration to submit a more reasonable proposal. He highlighted the stark contrast between the U.S. defense spending and that of the rest of the world, noting that the proposed budget is nearly equivalent to the combined defense expenditures of all other nations.
"When I first entered the Senate, the defense budget was just over $700 billion. Now, we're looking at a request that is twice as much. It's an astronomical increase, and it's hard to justify given the current global context," Kelly remarked.
Golden Dome and the Physics Challenge
One of the key components of the budget proposal that Kelly finds particularly concerning is the plan to build a space-based missile defense system known as Golden Dome. He believes that the technological challenges associated with this project are immense and that the system may not deliver on its promised capabilities.
"The physics involved in Golden Dome is incredibly complex. I have serious doubts about its feasibility, and I fear we'll end up spending a fortune on a system that doesn't work as intended. It's a risky and potentially costly venture," he added.
War with Iran and Munitions Depletion
In addition to the budget concerns, Kelly also expressed alarm over the state of the U.S. munitions stockpile in light of the ongoing war with Iran. He cited Pentagon briefings that detailed the significant depletion of specific munitions, attributing this shortage to the lack of a clear strategic goal, plan, and timeline for the conflict.
"The American people are less safe because of this. We've expended critical resources without a well-defined strategy, and now we're left with depleted munitions. This puts us at a disadvantage should we face another conflict, whether it's with China in the Western Pacific or elsewhere," Kelly explained.
